The clouds had gathered as we flew south from Oslo, but the day was brightened when we saw Mari, Abby and Anette (Mari's mom) at the airport! Soon we were at their lovely home, perched on the hillside overlooking the fjord and Varoddbrua (bridge). We enjoyed some Norwegian open faced sandwiches on the balcony, then a delicious barbecue dinner on the deck later. Mari's father, Lars-Ivar, is a talented cook and we reap the benefits!
The next day, Thursday, we head into the city of Kristiansand (population about 80,000) via Anette's little boat! A tour past some local islands, then we moor at Fiskebrygge (fish market) and explore on foot after enjoying some fresh shrimps. A highlight is a private tour of Mari's high school - Tangen - a two year old arts/construction high school. The photo of all the girls is on the rooftop social area! Mari's twin sister, Bergljot (Burgie) just spent a year in Nebraska and a family she knew there was also in Kristiansand for the day and also was on the tour and came to the house for dinner in the evening.
After dinner David, Anette, Mari, Abby and I rode bikes back into town (about 2 miles) and it was starting to sprinkle on the way. As we arrived at the town square where a free concert was going on, it turned to heavier sprinkles and soon it was fully raining! We were soon drenched (and I was thankful I had my rain jacket with hood!) And didn't stay long before heading home again....on our bikes! ... At 10:30 at night it was still light enough to see and warm enough to not be cold despite being very wet!
